I'm always a fan of natural ingredients over processed chemical ingredients. Could you make an Onion Dip by using a packet of stuff? Yes, will it taste as good as a Dip made from Onions? No.
This recipe is easy and straightforward to make; it just takes a little time to caramelize the onions.

Ingredients
2 tablespoon Olive Oil
1 large Yellow Onion (cut into even 1/4-inch thick rings)
1 clove Garlic (minced)
1 1/2 cup Sour Cream
3/4 cup Mayonnaise
Kosher Salt
Pepper
Directions
Heat the olive oil in a sauté pan over medium heat. Add the onion, and season with a large pinch of salt, then toss to coat in oil.
Arrange the onion into an even layer in the pan, and cook, stirring occasionally, but retaining an even layer. Cook until the onions caramelize, about 10-15 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in the garlic.
Combine remaining ingredients in a food processor. Add the onions, garlic, and season with black pepper. Pulse until thoroughly combined, then transfer to the refrigerator. Serve chilled.
